Abstract:
Growers of the cut flower Anthurium andreanum used to produce the crop in a growing medium consisting mainly of coniferous forest litter.
Research has shown that the crops can be grown with equally good results in peat tailings or in fibrous sphagnum peat.
If these materials are used, the pH should be increased to about 5.0 by the addition of lime.
It is also usual to add fertilisers to the medium before planting.
A nutrition experiment with five levels of nitrogen and three levels of potash showed that the potash requirements of Anthurium are relatively high.
The best results were obtained with an annual dressing of 20 g N and 30 g K2O per m2. At optimum nutrition levels the mature Anthurium leaves contained 2% N and 3% K.
