ISHS Acta Horticulturae 82: Symposium on Production of Protected Crops in Peat and other Media

SUBSTRATES FOR PROTECTED CROPPING

Author:   F. Penningsfeld
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1978.82.1
Abstract:
A review is given on our up to date knowledge of growing substrates. The comparison of glasshouse soils, horticultural soils and growing substrates shows characteristic differences regarding water storage and delivery, nutrient reserve and availability, aeration, root activity and nutrient uptake which cause much higher yields per square metre when the substrate is produced carefully and used properly. Decisive for success are the adjustment of the substrate to the cultivated plant species, the cultivation method used and the environmental conditions. With tables and figures the attributes and possibilities of improvements of the most important growing media are discussed.
