Author:   E. Yalcınkaya
Keywords:   cornelian cherry, Cornus mas, research, grove, Turkey
Abstract:
The first unsystematic and systematic studies on cornelian cherry were started at the Fruit Research Institute in 1947 and 1988. The studies were a pomological and selection procedure from different parts of Turkey. Then, some selection studies were conducted by different Research Centres and Universities. Most of the studies consisted of selection breeding from nature. However, some studies were conducted on e.g., pollination studies, propagation techniques. As a result of the selection studies the superior types were selected from wild and cultivated populations. The cornelian cherry collection orchards were established in different centres and universities. The best suitable propagation methods were developed. Also, nutritional status, post harvest physiology and food processing techniques were investigated. The types were under the registration stage.
