| Abstract:
Iran is a vast plateau situated in Southwest Asia (Middle East), with latitudes between 25˚03′ and 39˚47′ north and between longitudes of 44˚05′ and 63˚18′ east, which is surrounded by great mountains. It has an area of 1,648,195 kmē. The average annual rainfall is about 240 mm with a wide variance ranging from less than 50 mm in the central desert, up to 1,500 mm in the northern areas. The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is native of Iran and its name in the Persian language is "Anar". It is extensively cultivated in Iran, India, Afghanistan and in the Mediterranean countries like Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Turkey. It is also grown to some extent in Tajikistan, Pakistan, the USA and China. Pomegranate is growing in nearly the whole of Iran, except Hamedan province, with 56,329 ha of bearing trees and 7,404 ha of non-bearing trees and 705,166 t production. In this study a glance on the situation of pomegranate production in Iran during the last 10 years, export of commercial cultivars and a survey of the production and export of other countries is given. Here introducing major pomegranate exporting and importing countries, suggesting economic markets for their production and also important factors in marketing and exporting of pomegranate, comprising cultivation, management and harvesting are discussed. Development of commercial cultivars based on a 5-year Economic, Cultural and Social Development Plan (2005-09) which forces an increase of the areas with 6,298 ha and a renewal of 15,655 ha of old cultivar is also discussed. The ultimate goal is to reach a total production of 1,028,917 t in 2009 and improving quality through new packing and processing systems. | |
