Abstract:
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a fruit traditionally grown in the Mediterranean region for many years. North Cyprus, which is a Mediterranean country, has a suitable ecology for pomegranate growing. The country does not have enough of regular pomegranate orchards. Thus, the sufficient amounts of the earlier and the middle season and the latest pomegranate cultivars should be grown in Cyprus to develop pomegranate growing. So, the aim of this study was to determine the adaptation of 10 pomegranate cultivars to the North Cyprus ecological conditions. The study was carried out with 10 pomegranate cultivars (33 N 11 Aşınar, 33 N 12 Ekşi Nar, 33 N 16 Silifke Aşısı, 07 N 14 Mayhoş IV, 07 N 04 Mayhoş II, 07 N 03 Yufka Kabuk, 07 N 08 Hicaznar, İzmir 1265, İzmir 1264, İzmir 1) in the Türkmenköy Research Station in North Cyprus by the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Çukurova between 2000 and 2002. In the study, the yield, fruit cracking rates and pomological traits of pomegranate cultivars were determined. Several pomegranate cultivars were found to be suitable for North Cyprus and İzmir 1, Hicaznar and İzmir 1264 were determined as the most yielding cultivars.
