ISHS Acta Horticulturae 818: I International Symposium on Pomegranate and Minor Mediterranean Fruits

PRELIMINARY CHARACTERIZATION OF SIXTY ONE CAPER CLONES (CAPPARIS SPINOSA L.)

Authors:   P. Melgarejo, P. Legua, J.J. Martínez, R. Martínez-Font, F. Hernández
Keywords:   Capparis spinosa, shrub, caper, fruit
Abstract:
Caper (Capparis spinosa L.) is a crawling and spiny Mediterranean shrub that thrives well in arid and semiarid climates, which makes it an interesting crop alternative in Southeastern Spain. A preliminary characterisation of 61 caper clones (plants as well as fruit) was performed under homogeneous growing conditions. For yielding purposes, nine clones performed outstandingly; CS 5 yielded the highest flower bud average weight. Regarding fruit quality, clone CS 45 showed the highest premium caper percentage.
