ISHS Acta Horticulturae 818: I International Symposium on Pomegranate and Minor Mediterranean Fruits

PRELIMINARY CHARACTERISATION OF FOUR CHINESE DATE CLONES (ZIZIPHUS JUJUBA MILLER)

Authors:   P. Melgarejo, R. Martínez-Font, P. Legua, J.J. Martínez, F. Hernández
Keywords:   Ziziphus jujube, fruit, acidity, maturity index, taste
Abstract:
Chinese date (Ziziphus jujube) is a widespread fruit tree species in China, India and Japan among other countries. In Spain it is definitively a minor fruit tree, though its cultivation in South-eastern Spain (Alicante and Murcia provinces) is a good alternative to other water consuming crops as stone and citric fruit. Selection for the best genotypes and modern cultivation techniques are a must. Clones J1, J2, J3 and J4 were characterised under homogeneous growing conditions during 2005. The average fruit weight ranged from 23.53 g to 5.87 g (clones J1 and J2, respectively). While J4 showed a soluble solid content of 20.66 °Brix, clone J1 yielded the lowest one with 17.5 °Brix. Among all evaluated clones, J4 scored the best organoleptic test.
