PISTACIA LENTISCUS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION IN TURKEY

Abstract:
Pistacia lentiscus including Pistacia species belongs to the Anacardiceae family. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree. It grows in the forest area or just near the seaside in Turkey, very drought tolerant. It tolerates to -7°C in wintertime. Male and female flowers are on separate trees. Pollination occurs by wind. Fertilized fruits turn to a dark black color, empty fruits are red. P. lentiscus can grow from 0 to 700 m above the sea level. It bears very small and round fruits. Leaves are even-pinnately compound, leathery, from 3 to 5 pairs of 2-2.5 cm leaflets; with winged petiole.
