| Abstract:
At the time of the conquest of Hungary in the 10th century sandy soils were covered with forests and pastures. Cultivation turned them to moving sand. In the 19th century, phylloxera destroyed Hungary’s flourishing and famous vineyards on the hillsides. However, since sand proved to be immune to phylloxera vineyards were was transferred to sandy soils. Sand areas are mostly found in the lowlands and a new wine region has been established there. Cultivar selections and viticultural and enological technologies have been worked out for sandy soils. Today the largest wine region of Hungary is found in the Great Hungarian Plain. | |
