Abstract:
This study was conducted to assess the variation among four phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae Fitch) populations for biotype formation. The populations originated from major Austrian wine regions: Burgenland, Wachau, Weinviertel and Wien. The performance of single founder lineages randomly selected from the populations was tested on two host plants, Vitis vinifera and the rootstock host 125AA (V. berlanderi × V. riparia). Clonal lineages on roots were established with eggs obtained from leaf-feeding adults. Performance was examined over two generations using a simple isolation chamber system for greenhouse assays. A high variation was observed among clonal lineages from similar origins as well as from different origins. Our results suggest potential for quick adaptation of phylloxera clonal lineages to new hosts which may lead to new biotypes.
