Abstract:
Nuts from controlled crosses of chestnut trees were analyzed for protein, total fat, carbohydrate, and fatty acid content by a commercial laboratory.
None of the levels of any of these nutrients were maternally inherited, since levels in nuts from the same tree were different with different pollen parents.
Amounts were not the same in reciprocal crosses, indicating a complex inheritance.
Results were compared with results obtained in previous studies.
Since choice of pollinizers appears to affect nutrient composition of the nuts it may also affect the flavor and quality of the nuts produced.
