Abstract:
Apart from chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica), ink disease (Phytophthora spp.) and Cytospora canker (Cytospora spp.) are known to cause die-back of branches and even complete death of chestnut trees.
In this paper, focusing primarily on ink disease, prevalence of the disease in the main chestnut growing areas was described and isolation, pathogenicity tests and identification studies were summarized.
The pathogenic isolate ‘K-2’ was identified as P. cactorum x P. hedraiandra hybrid.
The symptoms of Cytospora canker were described and similarities and differences between the symptoms of chestnut blight and Cytospora canker on the trees and their development in culture medium have been addressed.
