Authors:   H. Celik, U. Serdar, N. Beyhan
Keywords:   Castanea sativa Mill., budding, grafting-device, propagation
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to determine the usability of different grafting devices in chestnut propagation. The study was carried out in field conditions during 2004-2005. One year old seedlings of genotype 554-14 were used as rootstock, and shoots with dormant buds of genotype SE 21-2 were used as scion materials. Five grafting methods. Omega, wedge and chip-budding via hand manual grafting-units, whip grafting and chip-budding by hand were used. Grafting was done in the third week of April, after bud burst in rootstocks. Grafting units gave lower graft success than hand grafting and budding. Graft success of hand manual grafting units was between 0.0 (omega) and 54.4% (chip-budding). The highest graft success (77.7-89.4 %) was obtained froms whip grafting.
