ISHS Acta Horticulturae 814: XII EUCARPIA Symposium on Fruit Breeding and Genetics

EFFECT OF VARIOUS ROOTSTOCKS AND TREE SPACING ON THE SIZE OF 'VANDA' SWEET CHERRY FRUITS

Authors:   Z.S. Grzyb, E. Rozpara
Keywords:   sweet cherry, rootstock, yield, fruit quality
Abstract:
Fruits of ‘Vanda’ sweet cherry trees growing on various rootstocks (‘F12/1’, ‘GiSelA 5’, ‘Maxma 14’, ‘Weiroot 158’, ‘Tabel Edabriz’, ‘P-HL A’, ‘P-HL B’, ‘P-HL C’) were sorted by means of a Summerland ‘gräb’ fruit-sizer according to eight size classes in the range from 23 to 30 mm. The fruits came from trees growing at an in-row spacing of either 1.5 m or 2.5 m. The two variables – the type of rootstock and the distance between trees in a row – did not have a significant effect on the size of sweet cherry fruits cv. ‘Vanda’, except for ‘Tabel Edabriz’ and ‘P-HL B’. The former significantly increased the number of small fruits while the latter did the same for large fruits. The 1 m increase in the distance between trees in a row had a beneficial effect on fruit quality only for the trees growing on ‘P-HL B’. This effect was not found in the remaining trees.
