SOUR CHERRIES PRUNUS CERASUS L. WITH COLUMNAR TREE HABIT

Author:   M. Schuster
Keywords:   P. cerasus, columnar trees, fruit breeding
Abstract:
Sour cherries, Prunus cerasus L., with columnar growth habit have not been reported in the literature so far. Trees with dwarf, compact, columnar, and weeping growth habit occur occasionally in populations of sour cherry seedlings. The columnar type is characterized by a natural distinctive upright growth habit with shorter internode length, narrow branch angles, and a fruit set on short shoots. Thirteen seedlings with columnar tree habit were selected in six different sour cherry cross combinations. All these seedlings originated from cross combinations with Hungarian sour cherry cultivars (‘Köröser’, ‘Csengödi’, ‘Ujfehertoi fürtös’). Two sour cherry clones with good fruit characteristics were described.
