THE SLOVAK APRICOT BREEDING PROGRAM

Author:   D. Benedikova
Keywords:   Prunus armeniaca, cultivars, fruit quality, frost resistance, genetic resources
Abstract:
The breeding program to obtain a genetic improvement of the apricot began in 1964 at the Research Institute of Plant Production Piestany and has been carried out according to several objectives. The most important were resistance to frost, improvement of high fruit quality, and resistance to diseases. Among 10,000 seedlings obtained by cross-pollination, 250 were selected in the last time in station trials as advanced selections. Since the start day of the breeding program up to now, ten cultivars have been registered in the Slovak Republic. The most promising are ‘Vesna’, ‘Veselka’, ‘Veharda’, and ‘Vemina’. All cultivars of Slovak origin were included in a new collection of plant genetic resources. This collection was founded as a field collection of Gene bank SR in SARC-RIPP Piestany four years ago.
