ISHS Acta Horticulturae 814: XII EUCARPIA Symposium on Fruit Breeding and Genetics

CHARACTERIZATION OF FRUIT GENETIC RESOURCES IN SWITZERLAND

Authors:   D. Szalatnay, R. Eder-Bauermeister, B. Duffy, M. Kellerhals
Keywords:   fruit genetic resources, fire blight, breeding, fruit quality
Abstract:
Based on the Convention on Biological Biodiversity (CBD) and the Global Plan of Action, the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture is implementing the National Campaign Plants (NCP) for the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources. In respect to fruit genetic resources after a nation-wide inventory, the decentralised collections are currently being completed and the characterization of the accessions has started. Considering international standards, guidelines for the phenotypic description of the fruit genetic resources were developed which are being practically applied. In addition, a large number of accessions will be tested for their scab (V. inaequalis) and powdery mildew (P. leucotricha) resistance in a field trial. Selected genotypes are also being tested for fire blight (E. amylovora) resistance in the greenhouse. The first results of this screening confirm significant differences between accessions. The project aims at defining accessions that might be useful for cultivation to develop and promote new products with traditional varieties as well as for breeding towards broadening the genetic basis for disease resistances, tree architecture, and fruit quality.
