Abstract:
Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) is a naturally grown fruit species in woody regions of Serbia and Montenegro. As a cross-pollinated species, genetic diversity is wide. The objectives of this research were to select fruitful and high quality cornelian cherry types suitable to the needs of commercial growers and amateur gardeners. Fruits were mainly dark red, cherry red, or rarely yellow. Fruit shape was oval with average weight ranging from 3.6 to over 8 g, up to 16.2% TSS, and 36.1 mg vitamin C/100 g. The main techniques for the vegetative propagation were budding on seedling rootstocks with 85.9-93.0% success rate and rooting of green cuttings. Traditional rural recipes were used to produce jam with and without heat treatment, juice, marinated fruits, liquor, and brandy. All products were evaluated by a taste panel.
