Abstract:
Attempts to establish DNA barcodes for plants constitute worldwide attention and significance for species identification or origin and for resolution of classification problems. In this paper, a preliminary phylogenetic analysis is presented for representative Lamiaceae taxa (species and subspecies) belonging to Satureja sensu lato (S. horvatii subsp. macrophylla, S. parnassica subsp. hellenica, S. cuneifolia, Acinos alpinus subsp. nomismophyllus, Calamintha nepeta subsp. glandulosa and Micromeria nervosa), using the ITS1 and ITS2 internal transcribed nuclear ribosomal regions and the 5.8S ribosomal gene.
The results are also compared to other representatives of Satureja sensu lato investigated in previous studies. By using only the internal transcribed nuclear ribosomal ITS1 and ITS2 regions and not the 5.8S ribosomal gene, our results demonstrate both the divergence of representative taxa of closely related genera in Satureja sensu lato, as well as the divergence of representatives within Satureja sensu stricto.
