EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE GIBBERELLIC ACID AND 2, 4-DICHLOROPHENOXYACETIC ACID ON VEGETATIVE INDUCTION IN CACTUS (OPUNTIA FICUS-INDICA (L.) MILLER.)

Author:   A. Rabhi
Keywords:   axillary bud, GA3; 2, 4-D, vegetative shoot, cactus cladode
Abstract:
Injection of gibberellic acid (GA3, 100ppm) and 2,4-D (100ppm) were applied during cool or warm temperature to determine their effects on shoot initiation in cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica).The cladodes had similar characteristics and the same age (1-year ). Each hormone solution was injected alone, in cladodes. All released axillary buds produced vegetative shoots. None vegetative shoots were produced by buds of non treated, GA3-treated and 2,4-D treated cladodes under 5°C. Buds of non treated and 2,4-D treated cladodes initiated growth and they produced vegetative shoots during the exposure inside a growth chamber (25°C day/ 20°C night, 12h photoperiod). Buds of non treated and 2,4-D treated cladodes under 5°C during 2 weeks followed by 6 weeks under (25°C day 20°C night) initiated growth and they produced vegetative shoots. GA3 did not stimulate initiation of axillary vegetative shoots in Opuntia ficus-indica.
