Abstract:
Interest in blueberries for the home garden is increasing in New Zealand and in Europe, especially in Germany where about 50% of plant production is sold to satisfy this requirement.
The desire of a hobby gardener is for an easily managed plant, with attractive foliage and plant habit, as well as good fruit production. ‘Hortblue Poppins’ is a new blueberry cultivar currently in high demand in Europe because of its characteristic upright habit, good architecture and attractive foliage.
The fruit ripen in mid season, about the same time as ‘Bluecrop’. The berries are small and round with good firmness and bloom.
They are balanced in taste, crisp, with a distinctive ‘snap’ or ‘pop’ when bitten. ‘Hortblue Poppins’ is also easy to manage, with good tolerance to anthracnose and botrytis.
