Abstract:
Seedlings of wheat were subjected to acclimation at 2°C in the presence of two inhibitors of linolenic acid synthesis.
BASF 13–338 and Sandoz 6706 had no effect on the development of freezing tolerance.
Seedlings, when subjected to desiccative stress (90% R.H. at 24°C) developed a significant level of freezing tolerance without an increase in lipid unsaturation.
The results of both experiments indicated that the stimulated synthesis of linolenic acid, which occurs in cereals during low temperature acclimation, is unrelated to the development of freezing tolerance.
