ISHS Acta Horticulturae 81: Symposium on Winterhardiness in Woody Perennials

WINTER HARDINESS AND REGENERATION OF FROST INJURED FRUIT TREES

Author:   M.A. Solovieva
Abstract:
The seasonal changes of frost resistance in various tissues of shoots, trunks and roots of fruit trees were studied. The duration of cambial activity, and the changes in the state of water during freezing at gradually lowered temperatures in apple and apricot trees of different winter hardiness were analyzed. Mathematical analysis of the obtained experimental data of the seasonal changes in the content of phosphorus compounds in the tissues of apple cultivars permitted to characterize the endogenous annual biorhythms and adaptation to low temperatures. The specific protective functions of metabolically active tissues were revealed during imposed and deep stages of dormancy.

The injuries of cambium and cambial zone, primary and secondary xylem, and the regenerative ability after the injury, depending on the subsequent growth conditions were evaluated.

The role of phosphorus , potassium and nitrogen fertilizers applied at various levels in development of frost resistance of cambium and cambial zone cells, and in regeneration processes was demonstrated.
