Abstract:
In the previous studies we have shown the marked increase of ATP content and of energy charge /E.C./ during hardening of winter rape plants.
In order to investigate the possible reasons for this phenomenon, studies of the following enzyme activities: glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, pyruvate kinase /glycolytic enzymes/, NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase /enzyme of TCA cycle/, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase /regulatory enzyme of pentose phosphate pathway/ and ATP-ase were performed.
It was found that cold acclimation of winter rape plants did not affect substantially the activity of the studied enzymes though some transient changes in these activities were observed.
Present results indicate that the increase of energy charge in the cold-treated leaves was rather due to the limited utilization of ATP in growth processes than to the cold induced synthesis of ATP. We have also found /preliminary experiments/ that cold pretreatment increased stability of two studied gycolytic enzymes: glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase inthe frost injured leaves.
