Abstract:
Asphyxiation of bark and cambium at the base of the stem under snow is a little known and dangerous type of winter injury.
Six major anomalous divergences in physiology of overwintering tissues occurring with asphyxiation have been revealed.
An approach to develop ways of increasing winter hardiness is suggested and the data from trial experiments that can be used to increase asphyxiation resistance are presented.
