ISHS Acta Horticulturae 81: Symposium on Winterhardiness in Woody Perennials

FACTORS AFFECTING CHANGES OF FROST RESISTANCE OF SOME APPLE CLONAL ROOTSTOCKS

Author:   Z. Gruca
Abstract:
In 1971–1974 the low temperature hardiness of the shoots of one-year old apple rootstocks was investigated: Antonovka cv., MM–104, MM–106 and Alnarp 2. The shoot samples collected for freezing tests were also analyzed for water soluble proteins, mineral nutrients and the content of water. Statistical analysis of the interactions between the investigated factors and the change of air temperature and the hardiness of the shoots was made. It was found that the diurnal fluctuations in temperature of the air had the greatest effect on the frost tolerance of the rootstocks. The content of water in the shoots was negatively correlated with the hardiness of the rootstocks. There was no significant correlation between the water soluble proteins and the content of mineral nutrients in the shoots and their cold hardiness.
