IMPACT OF IMPROVED VEGETABLE FARMING TECHNOLOGY ON FARMERS' LIVELIHOODS IN INDIA |

| Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the major factors influencing farmers’ decision to adopt the Lakshmi tomato hybrid and Malini cucumber hybrid commercialized by the Nunhems and Seminis seed companies respectively. PRA methods and semi-structured interviews were employed to collect the data. PKM1 was the predominant variety cultivated in the survey locations before the introduction of Lakshmi. Lakshmi was widely adopted by the farmers because of its superior characteristics. Open pollinated green long cucumbers were completely replaced by Malini shortly after its introduction. Although the production cost was higher in the case of Lakshmi compared to other popular varieties, the net income realized was higher by two to four times due to the increased productivity. Similarly, those farmers who grew the Malini hybrid realized an average net income which was more than double that compared to other varieties/hybrids. Variations in yield and net income were found to decrease when farmers adopted recommended technology packages. | |
