Abstract:
This paper presents an innovation introduced by a private seed company in partnership with international development organizations, national government agencies and civil organizations to improve the capacity of smallholder vegetable farmers to qualify as active participants in dynamic market arrangements.
The approach is an integral part of a new business model developed in response to changes in the vegetable seed industry in the Philippines which partly fulfils the company’s corporate social responsibility.
The model offers a potential source of best practice that can be adapted towards the common goal of reducing poverty in an era where smallholder producers are being pushed aside, unable to adjust to the demands of a rapidly integrating and globalized world.
