Abstract:
The interest in commercial application of soilless culture is increasing since it is an excellent alternative to soil sterilization, increases the water use efficiency, provides plant production in non-arable soils and increases plant growth and crop quality.
This research aims to evaluate the development of soilless culture in Turkey and was carried out in 2007. Data was collected through questionnaires filled by face-to-face interviews and e-mail communications.
Results showed that soilless culture started in Turkey in 1995 in Antalya, which is the centre of protected cultivation.
However, enterprises started to prefer geothermal areas for the establishment of soilless greenhouses in the last years.
Therefore, the Aegean region that has abundant geothermal sources is becoming attractive for soilless cultivation.
Total soilless greenhouse area has reached a level of 185 ha and geothermal energy has been used for heating in 37% of this acreage.
Vegetables are grown in 92% of the area.
Tomato is the most prominent, while blocky type pepper occupies the second place.
