ISHS Acta Horticulturae 807: International Symposium on Strategies Towards Sustainability of Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climate

EFFECT OF NUTRIENT SOURCES ON FRUIT QUALITY OF CUCUMBERS GROWN IN DIFFERENT SOILLESS MEDIA

Authors:   F. Kıdoğlu, A. Gül
Keywords:   substrate, nutrition, cucumber, organic fertilization
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of fertilization using inorganic and organic fertilizers on fruit characteristics of cucumbers grown in different local substrates. The experiment was designed to test two factors, namely nutrient sources and substrates. The tested nutrient sources were inorganic nutrient solution, solid organic manure and organic nutrient solution. Plants were grown in different substrates [(a) 3:1 perlite:clinoptilolite, (b) 1:1 perlite:clinoptilolite, (c) 3:1 tuff:clinoptilolite, (d) 1:1 tuff:clinoptilolite, v/v]. Length, diameter, firmness, colour (L, Hue angle and Chroma), total soluble solids and titratable acidity were determined as fruit characteristics. It was found that the tested nutrient sources significantly influenced some fruit characteristics of cucumber growing in soilless media. Organic nutrition increased the size and firmness of fruits compared with inorganic nutrition. On the other hand, total soluble solids and titratable acidity were higher in the fruits harvested from the plants treated with inorganic nutrient solution. With respect to fruit colour, L and Chroma were higher in the fruits from organic nutrition plots.
