Abstract:
Soilless culture is utilized to avoid many associated problems with soil due to build up of soil born diseases and accumulation of salts because of continuous cultivation especially in protected cultivation. Some culture media used in soilless culture are usually expensive, especially the imported materials. The objective of this experiment was to study the performance of growing cucumber variety in wood straw and date palm leaf straw, which are cheap and locally available. These two media were used to study the performance of growth and yield of cucumber variety namely; Luna F1 in soilless techniques (Open System) under non-cooled screen house at Rumais, Oman during 2006/2007 season. Randomized Complete Block Design with five replications was used. Seedlings were planted in pots filled with these two media. The first year results showed no significant differences were observed in plant height, stem thickness, average fruit weight and yield between the media. High yielding medium was given by wood straw (2.2ton/Screenhouse). Heaviest average fruit weight was produced by date palm leaf straw (125 g/fruit). The two media showed excellent results in growing. The experiment will be repeated to confirm the results.
