| Abstract:
Leucadendron species are dioecious plants belonging to the family Proteaceae. Leucadendron flowers often have colourful bracts which surround the central flower head. The bract, cone and upper leaves are highly desired by the cut flower and foliage industry. There is a market preference for male or female flowers, depending on the species. Therefore, sex-specific markers would be useful to both Leucadendron breeding and production programs. In Leucadendron sex chromosomes have not been identified, due to the small size. In this study, 34 ISSR primers failed to identify universal sex-specific genomic DNA fragments in 12 Leucadendron species although some species-specific markers were identified. Suppressive subtraction hybridization (SSH) of genomic DNA was conducted to identify genome differences between male and female plants of Leucadendron discolor. The result indicated a high homology between male and female genomes of L. discolor. | |
