Abstract:
Sophisticated knowledge management and handling information as well as information and communication technologies (ICT) are skills of a knowledge-centered environment.
In the field of agronomic and horticulture sciences, media are a critical component of teaching and performance.
Therefore, "e-Learning" needs to be integral part at the Institute for Horticulture Science (IGW). The institute belongs to the agricultural faculty of the Humboldt - University to Berlin.
A study at the institute in 2006 illustrated the present conditions and outlined methods to create a sustainable integration of ICT in teaching and training.
Specialized technical and methodological knowledge for handling information and communication technology enables students and lecturers to master their present and future tasks within the range of the Life Sciences.
On the other hand E-Learning provides a location advantage (DINI writings Nr.5). The institute and the entire faculty has hereby the chance to sharpen its profile and demonstrate that innovative original teachings and research are connected with tradition and self-sufficiency at the Institute of Horticulture Science and by the entire faculty.
The results show that both groups studied endorse the use of media, but are uncertain over the exact applications.
Moreover, it is has been shown that media competence is not sufficient and the use of learning systems are merely limited to distributing material, not active learning.
Communication gaps, a lack of human resources, and the inertia of students are considered responsible for insufficient integration so far.
The students, however, expect more practice and expertise during their studies.
They are well equipped for the use of media and expect more than slide shows for active learning.
