Abstract:
During the last three years (2004-2007), in the framework of the EU project LIFE ENV/IT/463 (BIOMASS), several trials were carried out in Liguria, Piedmont and Tuscany to stimulate the adoption of innovative biodegradable starch based plastics.
Experimental and demonstrative trials, technical dissemination, implementation of best practices and optimisation of regional regulations were the most important activities promoted in the framework of “BIOMASS” project.
All the activities demonstrated the effectiveness of biodegradable films manufactured by Novamont in controlling weeds.
The tested films were easily adapted to a large number of crops mainly vegetables, (sweet basil, lettuce, tomato, artichoke, garlic, onion, sweet pepper, water melon, zucchini, Brussels sprout, eggplant, strawberry), fruit trees (hazel tree, grapevine) and ornamental trees (Christmas tree), in different growing seasons, in open field and under greenhouse.
Due to the successful results obtained during the implementation of the project, the regional government of Regione Liguria modified the regional production protocols in order to stimulate a wider adoption of biodegradable mulching films.
