Abstract:
Trials established at Hood River and Medford, Oregon in 1996 to evaluate the performance of pear cultivars on several ‘Old Home × Farmingdale’ (OHxF) clonal rootstock and interstem combinations were completed in 2005. The rootstock selections (OHxF 18, 97, 217, 333 and 513) are semi-vigorous to vigorous and easy to propagate by hardwood cuttings, while the interstem selections (OHxF 40, 51, 69 and 97) are considered semi-dwarfing and relatively difficult to propagate by hardwood cuttings.
Non-interstemed rootstocks were utilized as controls.
Fruiting cultivars were ‘Bartlett’ and ‘Bosc’ at Medford, and ‘Bartlett’, ‘Golden Russet Bosc’, ‘D’Anjou’ and ‘Columbia Red Anjou’ at Hood River.
Bearing began in the third leaf and production for the third through the tenth leaf were evaluated.
At both locations and over all cultivars, there was no significant effect (P>0.05) of interstem on the number of fruit per tree, tree yield, or fruit weight.
In addition, at Medford there was no significant effect of interstem on trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) or yield efficiency.
However, rootstock effects were significant (P<0.05) in most cases.
Rootstock effects on the number of fruit per tree and yield were significant with all cultivars except ‘Columbia Red Anjou’. At Medford, OHxF 97 had the highest yield and OHxF 513 had the lowest yield for both ‘Bartlett’ and ‘Bosc’, and OHxF 513 had lowest yield efficiency.
At Hood River, OHxF 217 had the highest yield for Golden Russet ‘Bosc’ and ‘Bartlett’, while OHxF 513 had highest yield for ‘d’Anjou’. At Hood River fruit weight in ‘Columbia Red Anjou’, ‘Bosc’, and ‘d’Anjou’ and yield in ‘Columbia Red Anjou’ and ‘Bosc’ were significantly affected by rootstock x interstem interactions.
At Hood River ‘Columbia Red Anjou’ and ‘d’Anjou’ main scaffold branches were more horizontal when OHxF 51 was used as either a rootstock or interstem
