Abstract:
Pear fruit need to be of high eating quality, convenient to eat, attractive to the consumer and produced with low chemical inputs to be successful in a very competitive fruit market.
The HortResearch pear breeding programme has combined European, Chinese and Japanese pears to create a range of crisp, juicy, highly flavoured pears, some of which can be eaten off the tree and/or after cold storage.
Strong directional selection is placed on fruit quality, especially for crisp and juicy textures, aromatic flavours, attractive and clean skin colour, pyriform fruit shape and long shelf life.
Along with traditional pear flavours, fruit with a range of flavours not typically found in pear have been identified.
These flavours include tropical, tropical pear, apple, melon, nutty and plum.
This presentation outlines the general progress made in the programme to date and specifically the textural and flavour changes that have occurred.
