Abstract:
Twelve simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs were used for characterization of 53 European pear (Pyrus communis L.) cultivars preserved in an orchard at the Kompetenzzentrum Obstbau-Bodensee (KOB) Southwest Germany.
Multiplex polymerase chain reaction PCR was used and consisted of four PCR reactions of three primer pairs.
In this study, SSR fingerprinting using 12 apple SSRs successfully separated the 53 European pear cultivars.
Several trees which were incorrectly named at planting were detected and then correctly identified.
At the same time, cultivars with multiple names were also identified.
Future extension of the genebank with additional cultivars will create a resource for breeding, plant nurseries and quality control.
