TRENDS IN EUROPEAN PEAR PRODUCTION AND CULTIVAR CHOICE IN JAPAN

Abstract:
The total cultivated area of pear in Japan reaches 1910 ha with a production of 28,200 tons in 2006. Fifty-seven percent of pears are produced in the Yamagata prefecture. Other prefectures in order of importance are Aomori 9%, Nagano 8%, Hokkaido 5%, Iwate 5%, Niigata 5% and Akita 5%. 'La France' accounted for 64% of the total production of pears in Japan in 2004. Other cultivars in order of importance are 'Bartlett' 8%; 'Le Lectier' 7%; 'Silver Bell' 4%; 'General Leclerc' 4%; 'Aurora' 3%; and 'Marguerite Marillat' 3%. The production area of 'Doyenne du Comice' and 'Ballard' is now increasing.
