Abstract:
In the last 10 years, pear production in Asia has increased to as much as 13 million metric tons (as of 2005), doubling from the production values of 1995. More than 90% of the total in Asia is produced in Eastern Asia countries and includes pears of three species, Pyrus pyrifolia, P. ussuriensis and P. communis. Among these countries, China has shown a remarkable increase year by year, representing 93% of the total production in 2005, whereas the production in Japan has had a decrease of 10% over the last 10 years.
In contrast, in Korea consistent increases can been found, despite the damage caused by erratic weather conditions in previous years (2002, 2003). In 2002, Taiwan participated in the World Trade Organisation and this has resulted in a lot of imports from Korea up to date.
In Japan, something new in terms of cultural practice, pest and disease control, new cultivars and so forth have been developed; a new training system for Japanese pears is promising to be efficient and profitable.
