Abstract:
The abortion and abscision of floral buds in pear trees ("bud jump"), is characterized by desiccation of bud scales and partial or total necrosis of floral primordia.
This anomaly decreases the flowering as well as fruit production index.
The disturbance affects mainly the lateral buds, although it may also occur in apical buds of those cultivars which have high demands for chilling temperatures.
The problem occurs in all pear production areas in Brazil and has been mentioned to occur in other countries, reducing commercial production of European pear cultivars.
The present work had objectivated the determination of the index of floral bud abortion on the cv.
Packhams Triumph during the years of 1995 and 1996. It was observed in this cultivar, that the necrosis of floral primordia is already evident at the end of the summer and that it intensifies during flowering.
