Abstract:
The influence of chemical and hand thinning on quality and quantity of pear fruits (Pyrus communis L.) cv.
Williams was investigated at Piršenbreg (Slovenia) in the years 2005 and 2006. The experiment included four treatments: chemical thinning with NOKAD 2 ml/10 L, hand thinning 2 fruits/cm2 of trunk cross sectional area (TCSA), hand thinning 1 fruit/cm2 of TCSA and an untreated control in the year 2005. In the year 2006, one treatment was added: chemical thinning with NOKAD 4 ml/10 L. The chemical thinner didn’t sufficient thin pear fruits in 2005, probably because dose of the thinner was too low.
Chemical thinning with 4 ml/10 L of NOKAD had statistically significant influence in 2006 on higher fruit dimensions (weight, width, height) and soluble solids but had no influence on firmness, number of flowers, number of fruits and yield per tree.
Hand thinning 1 fruit/cm2 of TCSA had a significant influence by increasing fruit dimensions, soluble solids and firmness.
Hand thinning didn't have any negative effect on number of flowers, number of fruits or yield per tree.
