Abstract:
The paper presents a critical review of the results of the studies on growth regulators application in stone fruits, with particular reference to plum.
Numerous good results with growth regulators have been achieved in respect of nursery propagation, acceleration of beginning of fruiting, vegetative growth control, flower bud formation, flowering, fruit set, thinning, fruit size, fruit drop prevention, colour, ripening, fruit abscission, dormancy, fruit quality and winter hardiness.
However, practical application of the growth regulators is still insufficient or there is no application at all, except for their use in facilitating mechanical harvesting and fruit trees propagation.
The main reasons for this can be given as follows: the absence of thorough, systematic investigations, both fundamental and applied, on the multi-and interdisciplinary cooperation basis; environmental factors fluctuations; the use of various substances, concentrations and methods; imprecise treatments differing from the ones in trials, and some other reasons.
In order to improve the work and to increase the use of growth regulators in stone fruits, a model of the approach to the investigations that will enable a more rapid introduction of results in the commercial practice is presented in this paper (Figure 1).
