Abstract:
Ethrel at 2500 ppm applied to Jonathan apples 6 weeks before harvest caused 11% fruit drop 6–8 days after treatment.
Ethrel at 1000 ppm induced 9% drop after 60 days.
Treatments at 250 and 500 ppm gave results similar to those in the controls.
All treatments induced loss of colour on the dropped fruits.
On the attached fruits the best homogeneous red colour developed after treatment with 500 ppm.
Fruit firmness was lowest after the 2500 ppm treatment.
Ethrel at 1000 ppm induced glassiness and Jonathan spot in fruit kept at 24°C. During CA storage at 2°C. the apples from the 500 ppm treatment showed greatest loss of weight and 24% developed scald; no other significant physiological disorder was recorded.
