ISHS Acta Horticulturae 80: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

THE ACCELERATION OF RIPENING OF APPLES BY THE USE OF ETHEPHON, SADH AND NAA

Authors:   A. Basak, Z. Soczek, Z. Golik, B. Niezborala
Abstract:
Ethephon was applied to apple trees of cvs. Close, Yellow Transparent, James Grieve and McIntosh to accelerate fruit ripening and harvest and to increase fruit coloration. For cv. Close, ethephon at 480 mg/l used about 2 weeks before expected harvest accelerated fruit ripening by about 9 days. NAA was added to stop preharvest fruit drop. The treatment also induced better coloration of apples. Ethephon generalley accelerated fruit ripening in the other cultivars, but sometimes reduced fruit size.
