ISHS Acta Horticulturae 80: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

THE USE OF CEPA TO AID HARVESTING OF SOUR CHERRY AND PLUM

Authors:   F. Jaumien, A. Rejman
Abstract:
Effects of single sprays with 2-chloroethyl/phosphonic acid (CEPA) on fruit removal of sour cherry have been studied for three years and plum for two years. The increase in fruit removal of Nefris and Schatten-morelle sour cherry was from 24–65% for the control to 67–100% when hand shaken for those treated with CEPA.

CEPA concentration 240–360 ppm applied 7–10 days before the harvest gave optimum results. CEPA at 240 ppm applied on Prune Wangenheim and Stanley plum 7–10 days behore harvest caused 95–100% fruit drop when hand shaken, compared with 34–48% from non-treated trees.

Harvest time of the treated fruit of sour cherry was reduced by 20–25% compared with non-treated fruits and the harvest time of treated fruits of plum was reduced by 50%.

CEPA increased soluble solids and decreased acidity of the sour cherry and plumfruits.
