Abstract:
Treatments with NAA, NAAm, and carbaryl as thinning agents on the apple cultivars Belle de Boskoop, Cox's Orange Pippin, Glockenapfel, Golden Delicious, Jonathan and McIntosh resulted in fairly satisfactory thinning.
Some morphactins and CGA 15281, gave promising results; CEPA generally did not thin Golden Delicious, but thinned the other cultivars.
A favourable distribution of the fruits within the trees required acurately calibrated sprayers to ensure an even application of the thinning compounds.
The ethylene releasers and the morphactins are thought to be not suitable for fruit thinning because variation of the results was too great.
CEPA in Golden Delicious frequently decreased fruit growth considerably.
