Abstract:
A useful method of producing citrus fruit abscission by superficially injuring the peel with chemicals is now commercially available for use in Florida.
Production of ethylene (C2H4) by superficial peel injury is the principal mode of action.
The 'Valencia' orange cultivar has proven to be the most difficult to loosen, and several research programs aimed at better understanding the physiology involved are now underway.
Ethylene-releasing chemicals, such as ethephon (2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid), do not injure the fruit peel but their use is limited because of phytotoxicity to some Citrus species.
