ISHS Acta Horticulturae 80: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

PEACH FRUIT ABSCISSION: THE MODE OF ACTION OF THINNING AGENTS

Author:   F. Zucconi
Abstract:
The variability of the peach fruit response (Am) to thinning agents (growth regulators) is related in this work to the dynamic changes which characterize the natural abscission (An). Results show that, ceteris paribus, the response to regulators (Am) increases proportionally to An and then proportionally decreases for An values below 40% or above 50% respectively. It appears, too, that the variable response of fruit treated at different stages of development (t) results from the interaction between An and a proportionality factor (a + bt). This interaction is then a sufficient condition for the formation of a characteristic peak of response to regulators, as well as for its shift, or precession, correlated with the intensity of the response. These results confirm that the abscission response to growth regulators is dependent upon a number of variables whose analysis and control are of primary importance for research on chemical thinning.
