ISHS Acta Horticulturae 80: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

INDOLEACETIC ACID AND OTHER PHYSIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE SUBSTANCES IN FRUIT AND OTHER PLANT SEEDS

Authors:   M.G. Nikolaeva, E.N. Polyakova
Abstract:
IAA and ABA-like substances have been found in the dormant seeds of apple, cherry and Cornus mas L. in concentrations high enough to inhibit germination. These hormones were also found in seeds of Caragana arborescens L. which have no dormancy. It is therefore suggested that seed dormancy in fruit trees and other plants might result from the low activity of enzymes which, in non-dormant seeds, reduce the concentration of physiologically active substances below the threshold of inhibition.
