Abstract:
Seedless fruit of peach (Prunus persica (L) Batsch, 'Redhaven') developed following a late (11th June, 26 mm fruit length) spring frost which killed the seed, but had minimum effect on the pericarp.
GA3 (foliar spray, 100 or 200 mg liter-1) applied to frost-damaged and nondamaged fruit had no significant effect on abscission, but markedly stimulated fruit growth.
Nontreated fruits without viable seed attained 77% of the weight of those with seed, while GA3-treated seedless fruit were nearly as large as nontreated fruit containing developing seed.
Among seeded fruit, size distribution of nontreated fruit was bimodal, while that of GA3-treated fruit was monomodal and narrower in range.
The smallest and largest size classes were not present in the GA3-treated fruit populations.
